In Vancouver Island most North-facing roof areas that receive little sunlight are prone to moss. Moss does not grow in equally everywhere. First it develops in perennially shady areas and in places that tend to be cool and damp. Moss on roofs begins thin and thickens through time, and as it thickens it will start to lift the shingles and begin to allow moisture through the roofing materials. This thick moss will also hold moisture in one location for long periods of time, which will break down the roofing materials.
